Rice is an ancient, popular ingredient and the main source of nourishment for over half of mankind. Basmati rice was first cultivated at the foot of the Himalayas, thousands of years ago.
Basmati rice has a longer grain than other variants of rice, exuding a pleasant aroma reminiscent of walnuts when cooked. It is a non-sticky rice.
There are both white and brown variants of basmati rice. The difference between brown and white rice is that when hulled, brown rice still contains a layer rich in fiber and nutrients.
Significance, effects:
Brown basmati rice has a glycemic index lower than other rice, which means that the carbohydrates of the rice are digested at a slower rate, slowly raising blood sugar levels. Therefore, it’s recommended to replace white rice with this variant in the case of people with diabetes, insulin resistance or those seeking to lose weight.
Brown rice has a higher protein and fat content than the white variant. It also contains high levels of Vitamin Bs (with the exception of B12), manganese, phosphorus and iron, yet is low in sodium.
Use: Rinse thoroughly before use. Cook the rice in two parts water for approx. 25-30 minutes. Suitable for use as a side dish, porridge, risotto or in salads, one-pot and casserole dishes, in soups or even for desserts.
