Corn is one of the most ancient cereals. It originates from Central America, where indigenous people used it a wide range of ways. These included popcorn.
Corn and popcorn rapidly spread throughout the world. This was thanks in part to its simplicity and cheapness. The world’s first popcorn machine was made in the 19th century and its popularity remains undiminished since then.
The way popcorn is made is that the water trapped inside the grains reaches boiling point, resulting in internal pressure, which exits the kernel with explosive force.
Significance, effects
The kernels retain their internal values even after popping. Corn is a whole food cereal and it barely contains any protein and fat, only purely carbohydrates (in the form of starch). Its glycemic index is lower than most other snacks and it is relatively low in calories (this greatly depends on the way it’s prepared).
Use:
Popcorn can be made in a popcorn maker or in a covered pot under heat. Spices or cold-pressed oil can be added to the popcorn, along with melted plant-based margarine.
